Albert Shanker, the late president of the American Federation of Teachers, observed that, “Schools are the last unreformed institution from the 19th Century which are about to trundle, unchanged, into the 21st Century.” Reform efforts at all levels of our educational system tinker (at best) at the margins, and the institution of public schooling continues to wallow in the status quo.
As a professor of educational leadership, I am using this blog as a space to be a public intellectual; a place for me to share my thoughts and ideas on issues that lie at the intersection of at least three areas:
- Educational Policy
- Educational Leadership
- Educational Technology

John, Can you validate or clarify my understanding of Marzano’s errant research methods of 85 teachers employing his strategies for teaching and assessing. I have not read his material but his system is being pushed or at the very least suggested as the “ideal” way to note percentages of achievement in the classroom. I teach high school, and words like scales, etc. get thrown around quite a bit. It sounds like you’re suggesting that you have a significant amount of research experience and that his studies were flawed with variables that produced unreliable results which are being coined as reliable and 100% trustworthy. Meanwhile, those findings and packaged systems are being given to us teachers to implement in our classroom without any (seemingly) due diligence in assessing its validity.
